This is our ninth winter in Yunnan, and it's only the second time it has snowed in Kunming during that time. The previous time was five years ago and there was nowhere near as much snow as today. And this being such a rare event, I can tell you I was far from the only one walking with a camera at the ready.

Almost three years ago we visited Beijing in winter. It was freezing cold, especially coming from the warmth of southern Yunnan. We visited the Summer Palace, the lake of which was nearly completely frozen. Many people ignored the warning signs to stay off the ice, and risked a walk/slide on the frozen water.
It's that time of year again in which the cherries on the trees turn from green to red, and harvest is in full swing once more. As you can see in the photo, not all cherries ripen at the same time, hence harvest is done in several picking rounds, with the harvesting period normally lasting from October till February. This year, however, due to the heavy rains in October, the harvest in some regions has only just been kicked off. We now hope for dry, sunny weather so the beans can dry well.
In Kunming we live close to the Western Hills, a location visited by thousands of people every year. We climbed this mountain quite a few times already, and despite the main tourist spot being the dragon gate, it is this little, ancient looking gate which is my favourite. I fell in love with it the very first time we walked past it, and it hasn't lost any of its attraction ever since.
This week we discovered an unexpected yet beautiful and quiet bit of nature close to our home in Kunming, the Xihua wetlands. We never could have imagined such a peaceful place filled with the songs of birds and colourful flowers so close to the city and though it was only a short walk, we enjoyed every minute of it.

Whereas I have a passion for coffee, my wife has a passion for photography. Our years abroad have been documented in countless photos. Some of them just snapshots, others with a story behind them. Once a week we pick one we would like to share with you. Archives
